Responsible play

Decide what money and time you can afford to lose before considering an offer. A hedge, promotion or positive estimate does not make gambling risk-free, and choosing not to bet is always an option.

Written and reviewed by Content updated How we calculate and verify

These guides explain calculations and record keeping. They cannot make an amount safe for you or guarantee a result. If gambling is already affecting your money, time or relationships, you can go straight to support; you do not need to finish an offer, use a bonus or recover a loss first.

Separate your budget from the cash a hedge needs

Keep rent, bills, debt payments, savings and emergency money outside your gambling budget. Do not borrow to fund bets. A calculator tells you what a proposed pair requires; it does not decide whether committing that cash fits your life. If it does not fit your existing limits, skip it. Do not increase the budget to meet an offer's maximum.

Decide before startingWhat to write down
Total money budgetThe amount you have chosen to set aside across all books, with a defined period. Keep it separate from essential money.
Deposit limitThe maximum new money you will put into gambling during that period, across all accounts. Opening another book does not reset it.
Loss limitThe most actual loss you will accept before stopping. Allow for the money already exposed in open bets; expected refunds and bonuses are not recovered cash.
Time limitA session end time and an overall time allowance that includes finding offers, checking prices and managing records. Stop when the time is up.

Deposits, available balances and losses are different numbers. Reusing a balance can produce further losses without another deposit, and an open stake is unavailable even before the result is known. Keep your limits fixed during the session. A winning day or a promised reward is not a reason to extend them. No amount, percentage or time allowance removes the risk of harm.

Clear reasons to stop

  • A money or time limit is reached. Stop starting bets and offers. Do not raise the limit, switch books or borrow to continue.
  • You want to win back a loss. Increasing stakes, rushing a hedge or adding an unrelated bet to get even is a reason to step away.
  • Gambling is taking priority. Pause if you are missing sleep, work, bills or time with other people, hiding your activity, or repeatedly breaking your own limits.
  • You cannot check the decision clearly. Stop if you are distressed, exhausted, impaired, or unable to explain the terms, accepted stakes and possible outcomes.

An expiring bonus or unfinished rollover does not require you to keep gambling. Turn off promotional notifications and take a break from the offers and odds screens. If tickets are already open, ask the sportsbook how they will settle and how to withdraw eligible cash; do not assume an account break cancels accepted bets. You can ask someone you trust for support while you step away.

Set controls at the sportsbooks

Look for “Responsible Gaming” or “Safer Gambling” in each sportsbook's account settings. Set the deposit, loss or spending, and time limits it offers. Read what each control measures, when it takes effect and how changes work. Controls at one book may not cover another, so check every account and keep your combined budget in view.

For a concrete regulator reference, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement explains deposit, spending and time limits and other responsible gaming tools. Availability and rules elsewhere can differ; use your sportsbook's instructions and your state regulator's current guidance.

BreadSync tracks information; it does not enforce these limits. Bankroll and My Bets can help you review what you recorded, but they cannot block a sportsbook deposit or bet, start an operator timeout, or enroll you in self-exclusion. Default Bet Size is only a tool preference. A missing record or an estimated result must not be treated as permission to keep betting.

Timeouts, cool-offs and self-exclusion

A sportsbook timeout or cool-off pauses access for a chosen period under that operator's rules. Read its duration, coverage and effect on deposits, open bets and withdrawals before confirming. Deleting an app or closing BreadSync does not activate a timeout.

Self-exclusion is a formal request to restrict your gambling access. A state program may cover multiple licensed operators; an operator program may have different coverage. Check which gambling types and accounts it covers, how long it lasts, enrollment requirements and reinstatement rules. Do not assume it ends automatically or applies in every state, and do not open another account to bypass it.

Find support now
