Glossary

Every term these docs use, in plain English.

Account health
How willing a book is to keep taking your bets and sending you offers. It is the book's decision; see Limited for what to do if it changes.
Add to Tracker
The green bookmark on every pair row of BreadSync's Odds Screen (Pro). It opens Add Bet with both sides already filled in, so you only check them and save.
Alternate line
A spread or total at a different number from the main one, at its own price. Skip them while you are learning and stay on the main line.
American odds
How US books show prices. +300 means a $100 bet wins $300; -350 means you bet $350 to win $100.
Arbitrage
Betting every outcome of one market at different books when their prices disagree enough that you profit whichever wins: the implied probabilities add up to under 100%. Also called an arb; in the Low Hold view it is a row with a plus sign.
Bankroll
All the money you set aside for this, cash and bonus bets, across every book. BreadSync's free Bankroll page tracks it per book from your deposits, withdrawals and settled bets.
Bet reset
A name for a risk-free offer, like theScore Bet's First Bet Reset: if the covered bet loses, the stake comes back as bonus bets. Work it like any risk-free bet.
Bet slip
The panel where a bet waits before you confirm it. Check the team, the price, the stake and that it says one bet before you place it.
Bet-and-get
A welcome offer where a small first bet unlocks a set amount of bonus bets, like "Bet $5, Get $150". Some pay whether that bet wins or loses and some only if it wins, so read the terms.
Bonus bet
Betting credit from a book. If it wins you keep only the winnings, never the bonus amount itself; also called a free bet or free play.
Bonus bet toggle
The switch on a bet slip, often labelled something like "Use bonus bet", that pays the stake from your bonus balance instead of your cash. Turn it on for the bonus leg, then check that your cash balance did not move.
Book
Short for sportsbook.
Cash bet
A bet placed with your own deposited money. The hedge side of a conversion is always a cash bet.
Cash bonus
Bonus money added to your cash balance instead of a separate bonus-bet balance. There is nothing to convert, but it often comes with a rollover; also called site credit.
Cash out
Two meanings: withdrawing money from a book to your bank, or a book's offer to settle an open bet early for less. Do the first; never take the second on one side of a hedge.
Closing line value
How the price you took compares with the fair price just before the game starts, also called CLV. Beating the close again and again is the best early sign that your bets have a real edge.
Conversion
Turning a bonus bet into cash by betting the other side with cash at another book. You keep about the same amount whichever side wins.
Conversion rate
The share of a bonus bet you keep as cash after the hedge, shown on every row of the Free Bet view. Over 50% is worth taking, 55 to 60% is good and 60% or more is strong.
Daily promo
An offer that pays a bonus for each day you place a qualifying bet, over a set number of days. Opt in every day if the book asks you to.
Decimal odds
The price as the total a $1 bet returns, stake included: 2.00 is even money and 4.00 is +300. BreadSync's calculators switch between decimal and American.
Deposit match
A bonus worth a percentage of your deposit, up to a cap, like 20% up to $1,000. Bigger matches usually come with bigger rollovers, so read the terms before you deposit.
Deposit Optimizer
BreadSync's screen that splits a starting amount across your state's books, free with an account. It shows the bonus each deposit unlocks and the estimated profit.
Deposit refund
Some licensed books return the part of a deposit you never bet separately from the rest of a withdrawal, and it can arrive later. If it has not landed after about two weeks, contact the book's support with the request date.
Devig
Taking the book's margin out of a price so both sides add up to exactly 100%; what is left is the fair price. BreadSync's +EV Finder devigs a sharp book's prices to get it.
Even money
Odds of +100: you win exactly what you bet. Some books show it as "EV" or "Even".
Exchange
A betting app where customers take each other's bets instead of betting against the book, like Novig or ProphetX. Some charge a fee on winnings or on each trade, which BreadSync counts in its numbers.
Expected value
What a bet makes or loses on average if you could place it many times. A +EV bet pays more than its true chance of winning is worth; it still loses often, and the profit shows over hundreds of bets.
Expiry
The date an unused bonus bet disappears. Some books give only 7 days, so convert bonus bets within a day or two of getting them.
Fair odds
A price with the book's margin taken out, so both sides add up to 100%; also called no-vig odds. +EV betting compares every price with the fair odds from a sharp book.
FanCash
Fanatics' reward credit, which works like a bonus bet: only the winnings come back. It typically expires 7 days after it is issued, so convert it in the Free Bet view soon after it lands.
Favorite
The side expected to win. Its price has a minus sign, and it wins less than you bet.
Free bet
Another name for a bonus bet. BreadSync's Free Bet view and Freebet Calculator are named after it.
Free Bet view
The Odds Screen tab (Pro) that converts a bonus bet. Pick the book holding it and its size, and it ranks every hedge by how much of the bonus you keep.
Freebet Calculator
The free calculator in BreadSync Tools for one bonus bet. Type the bonus, its price and the other side's price, and it gives the cash to bet and what you keep.
Futures
A bet on something decided months away, like a season champion. Not used here, because it ties up money for months.
Geolocation
The location check every licensed book runs before it takes a bet. You must be physically inside a state where the book is licensed; never try to get around it.
Graded
When the book settles a bet as won, lost, push or void. BreadSync's My Bets grades your logged bets on its own once they are matched to a game.
Half-point line
A spread or total ending in .5, like 7.5. It can never push, because no game ends on half a point.
Heavy favorite
A side priced as very likely to win, shown as a big minus number like -1000. It pays very little, which is why it only suits a small first bet that has to win.
Hedge
A cash bet on the other side at a different book, sized so your result is about the same whoever wins.
Hedge book
Your second book, where the cash side of each pair goes. A big, familiar app with deep markets makes the easiest one.
Hold
What betting both sides of a game costs you, as a percent of the total you bet. One book's two sides typically hold about 4 to 5%, and the best pair across two books is often under 3%.
ID check
The identity check books run by law when you sign up, and often again on your first withdrawal. Use your own real details and upload what it asks for.
Implied probability
The chance of winning a price implies: +100 is 50%, -200 is about 67% and +300 is 25%. Add both sides of a game and anything over 100% is the book's margin.
Juice
The book's cut built into every price, also called vig. At -110 on both sides you risk $110 to win $100, and the gap is the juice.
Kelly criterion
A formula for how much of your bankroll to put on an edge: the edge divided by the net odds. Most bettors use a quarter or half of it, because the edge is only an estimate.
Limit
A cap on how much a book will take from you. A low max bet on one line is often just a quiet market; a limit on your account means the book has lowered what it accepts from you.
Limited
When a book lowers how much you can bet or stops sending you offers; it is legal and it is the book's call. Finish what is open, withdraw and move to the next offer, and never open a second account.
Line
The number or price a book posts on a bet, like -3.5 on a spread or +150 on a moneyline.
Line movement
Prices changing between when you look and when you bet, fastest just before a game starts. Re-check both prices before you confirm, and recalculate the hedge if one moved more than a point or two.
Line shopping
Comparing the same bet across books and taking the best price. BreadSync's Odds Screen does it across every book you switch on.
Liquid
Money in a book you can withdraw now, with no rollover left on it. BreadSync's Bankroll shows it on each book's card.
Listed pitchers
A baseball bet-slip setting that voids your bet if a named starting pitcher does not start; the other choice, Action, keeps the bet live. Choose Action at both books so both sides of a hedge stand or fall together.
Live betting
Betting on a game that has already started, at prices that move with every play. Place both sides of a hedge before the game starts instead.
Live chat
A book's support chat. Use it to confirm a bet qualifies for an offer before you place it, and screenshot the answer.
Locked in
Your result whichever side wins, once both bets are accepted at the prices shown. Until both are placed it is an estimate, and a price change or a partly accepted bet moves it.
Low hold
A pair of opposite cash bets at two books, priced so you lose only a little whichever side wins. It is how you use a profit boost or clear a rollover cheaply, and the Low Hold view finds them.
Low Hold view
The Odds Screen tab (Pro) that finds the cheapest two-sided bets. Pick the book with the boost or rollover as the Primary Book, and type any boost into Boost %.
Main markets
The moneyline, spread and total on the full game, shown on the game's front page. They are the only markets these docs use.
Max bet
The largest stake a book will take from you on one bet; it varies by market and by account. Check it at your second book before you place the offer bet, so the cash side is not cut short.
Minimum odds
An offer rule that only counts bets at a set price or longer, like -200: then -150 or +120 counts and -300 does not. Read it twice before your qualifying bet.
Moneyline
A bet on who wins the game, with no points added or taken away. The simplest market, and the one these docs use.
My Bets
BreadSync's free bet log. Both sides of a hedge sit together under the Hedges tab, and bets matched to a game grade themselves when it ends.
No-sweat bet
Another name for a risk-free bet: if your bet loses, the stake comes back as bonus bets, not cash.
No-vig odds
Another name for fair odds.
Odds
The price of a bet, which also sets what it pays. US books show American odds like +300 or -350.
Odds cap
The highest price a book lets you use a bonus bet at, if it has one; it limits how much you can convert. BreadSync does not set it for you, so type it into Max Odds on the Free Bet view.
Odds Screen
BreadSync's Pro page with the licensed US books' prices side by side. Its Free Bet, Risk-Free Bet and Low Hold views size both sides of an offer for you.
Opt in
Tapping the button in a book that attaches an offer to your account or bet. Do it before you bet, or the bet may not count.
Over/under
Another name for a total.
Parlay
One bet that combines several picks, all of which must win. Never use one for an offer or a hedge, even when a book allows bonus bets on parlays.
Partial acceptance
When a book takes only part of the stake you tried to bet. Size the other side to the amount actually accepted.
Payout
What a winning bet returns. A cash bet returns your stake plus the winnings; a bonus bet returns only the winnings.
Pending
A bet whose game has not finished yet. Its stake is out of your balance until it settles, so let it finish before you withdraw.
Playthrough
Another name for rollover.
Prediction market
An exchange that trades yes-or-no contracts on events, like Kalshi or Polymarket. A contract at 42¢ pays $1 if it happens, so its price is roughly the chance the market gives it.
Primary book
The book you pick at the top of the Free Bet, Risk-Free Bet or Low Hold view, usually the one holding the offer. Every row then puts one side at that book.
Profit boost
A token that raises the winnings on one bet by a set percent, so a 100% boost doubles them. Each usually has a small max stake, and you hedge the boosted bet to keep the extra whichever side wins.
Promo code
A code you enter when you sign up or deposit that tells the book which offer you want. If you forget it, ask the book's support to apply it before you bet.
Promo Converter
BreadSync's Pro page listing your state's welcome offers, each with an estimated cash value and the Odds Screen view that converts it. Tick each one off as you finish it.
Prop bet
A bet on a player's stats or one part of a game instead of the result. Not used here; stick to main markets.
Push
A bet that lands exactly on the line, like a total of 7 when the game ends 4-3, so the stake comes back. Some books do not return a bonus bet on a push, so put bonus bets on moneylines, or on a spread or run line at ±0.5 or ±1.5 where the book allows it.
Qualifying bet
The first bet an offer asks for, like "Bet $5", that unlocks the bonus. Opt in first, and check its minimum odds and whether it has to win.
Risk and to win
Two boxes on some bet slips: Risk is what you bet, To win is the profit you want. Type your stake in Risk, and check it did not change before you confirm.
Risk Free Bet Calculator
The free calculator in BreadSync Tools for a risk-free bet. Type both prices and your stake, set Freebet Conversion % to about 60, and it sizes the hedge.
Risk-free bet
An offer that refunds your first bet as bonus bets if it loses. The name is the book's, not a promise about the result: the refund is bonus bets, not cash. Also called a risk-free bet, first-bet insurance, a bet reset or a no-sweat bet.
Risk-Free Bet view
The Odds Screen tab (Pro) for risk-free offers. Pick the book and your stake, type about 60 into FB Conversion % (it starts at 70), and it ranks every hedge.
Rollover
The total you must bet before bonus money, or money tied to it, can be withdrawn, written as a multiple like 1x or 10x. Read the multiple, what it applies to, the minimum odds and the deadline; BreadSync's Bankroll tracks your progress per book.
Second-chance bet
Another name for a risk-free bet.
Sharp book
A book that takes big bets from winning bettors and moves its prices quickly, so its prices are the best estimate of the real chances. Pinnacle is the best known; it does not take US customers, and BreadSync uses it only as a reference.
Site credit
Bonus money that works like cash, so a win returns stake plus winnings, though it often has a rollover; some books also use the phrase for bonus bets. In BreadSync's Bankroll, log cash-like bonus under Site Credit and bonus bets under Free Bet Bonus.
Sportsbook
A licensed betting app, like DraftKings or FanDuel. Also called a book.
Spread
A bet on the margin of victory: Lakers -6.5 must win by 7 or more, and Wizards +6.5 win the bet if they lose by 6 or less, or win. Baseball calls it the run line and hockey the puck line.
Stake
The amount you bet.
Stateside
BreadSync's word for licensed US sportsbooks, and the setting to use in the Promo Converter and the Deposit Optimizer.
Straight bet
A single bet on one outcome, not combined with others. Every bet in these docs is a straight bet.
Three-way line
A market with three outcomes (home win, draw, away win) settled at the end of regulation, so an overtime win loses. Plus prices on both teams in hockey or soccer usually mean you are on one, so switch to the two-way moneyline before you hedge.
Total
A bet on whether both teams' combined score goes over or under a number the book sets. Also called the over/under; totals ending in .5 cannot push.
Underdog
The side expected to lose. Its price has a plus sign and it pays more, which is why bonus bets go on it.
Variance
The ups and downs around your expected result. With a real edge you can still be behind after hundreds of bets, which is why stake size matters.
Vig
Another name for juice: the book's cut built into every price. Hold measures it across both sides of a game.
Void
A bet the book cancels and refunds, for example when a game is postponed. Mark it Void in My Bets so it does not count toward your results.
W-2G
A tax form a sportsbook may send you for certain wins. Winnings are taxable income either way; keep your records and talk to a tax professional.
Wager
Another word for a bet.
Welcome offer
The bonus a book gives a new customer: bonus bets, a risk-free bet, profit boosts or a deposit match. Each person gets one per book, so claim it on purpose rather than with a random first bet.
Withdraw
Moving money from a sportsbook back to your bank. Books usually send it back the way it came in, and the first one may trigger an ID check.

21+ only. Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. Licensed sportsbooks only, and you must be in a state where the book operates. Every dollar figure here is an estimate: offers change, and results depend on the prices you get and each book's terms. BreadSync is not a sportsbook.
