Why is one sportsbook balance down if you hedged?

BreadSync2 min readUpdated How we calculate

The short answer

Because the losing stake comes out of one account while the winning payout lands in the other. A lower balance at one sportsbook does not tell you the result of the pair. Add both settled balances and account for deposits and withdrawals before calling it a gain or loss.

Follow both balances

Start with $200 at each book, $400 total. Bet $100 at +100 at book A and $102.44 at -105 on the exact opposite outcome at book B. Assume both settle normally, with no fees or other activity.

The pair loses about $2.44, not the $102.44 missing from book B if A wins. Equally, the increase at the winning book is not the pair's profit.

Keep money movements out of profit

Use the same set of accounts throughout. A transfer between those accounts should not create a gain or loss. Include any transfer or withdrawal still in transit so it does not appear to vanish.

This simple check assumes there are no open tickets. Available balance drops when cash is staked; it is not the same as a final loss. Reconcile settled results or track pending stakes separately without counting them twice.

Settled cash result = ending cash + withdrawals - deposits - starting cash

Keep bonus tokens separate

An unused $100 bonus bet is not $100 cash. Track it separately until its outcome creates cash. If the combined total still disagrees with your records, check missing tickets, duplicated entries, fees, and deposits before assuming a sportsbook error.

The takeaway

Judge the combined, reconciled result. Never place a recovery bet just because one account is down.
