How much cash do you need to hedge a bonus bet?
The short answer
It depends on the token amount and both prices, not the token amount alone. For a $100 stake-not-returned bonus bet at +250 with an opposite cash price of -300, the balanced hedge needs $187.50 in available cash at the hedge book.
Calculate the required hedge
In this example, the bonus payout is $250. The -300 hedge price is 1.3333 in decimal odds, so $250 ÷ 1.3333 = $187.50, using the exact recurring decimal. Either normal win/loss outcome leaves $62.50 after the cash stake is deducted.
This formula assumes a stake-not-returned token, exact opposite outcomes, matching rules, no fees, and no other accepted bets. It is not the formula for a no-sweat qualifying cash bet.
Cash hedge = bonus winning payout ÷ hedge decimal oddsCount cash you can actually use now
- Unused bonus tokens cannot pay for the cash hedge.
- An open bet's potential payout is not available cash.
- A pending withdrawal or transfer is not available at the receiving book yet.
- The sportsbook must accept the required stake, not just show a sufficient balance.
What if the hedge does not fit?
Before placing either side, compare another eligible pair that requires less cash. A smaller token or partial bonus amount only helps if the reward rules actually allow it. Do not borrow or use money needed for bills to reach a conversion target.
Keep room for a price change, but do not treat a buffer as permission to chase worse prices indefinitely. If a bet is already accepted, check its receipt and calculate the exposure before making another decision.
The takeaway
Check the required hedge against the available balance at that specific book before placing the bonus.
