Why do longer bonus-bet odds need more hedge cash?

BreadSync2 min readUpdated How we calculate

The short answer

Longer plus odds create a larger potential bonus payout. Covering that payout with a cash bet on the opposite side can require a much larger stake, especially when that side has a short price. A higher conversion percentage is not automatically a better fit for your balance.

A $100 token, two hypothetical pairs

The second pair improves the result by about $11.11 but ties up another $138.89 in hedge cash. These examples assume a stake-not-returned token, matching opposite bets, no fees, and normal win/loss settlement. Rounding can leave a cent between outcomes.

Follow the payout, not just the plus number

At +150, the bonus can pay $150. At +300, it can pay $300. The cash side must be sized to balance that larger amount.

The hedge price matters just as much. A short-priced favorite pays little profit per dollar staked. You may need hundreds of dollars there to offset a much smaller bonus token.

What to compare before committing

If the larger hedge does not fit money you can afford to tie up, choose another eligible pair or leave it. A few extra conversion points do not justify borrowing or committing a first bet you cannot cover.

  • Net cash after the hedge, not the bonus payout alone.
  • Available cash in the exact account taking the hedge.
  • The token rules and whether both markets settle the same way.
  • How long the cash could remain tied up, including postponements.

The takeaway

Compare dollars kept and dollars tied up side by side. They measure different things.
