Can you hedge two bets with different spread or total lines?

BreadSync2 min readUpdated How we calculate

The short answer

Not as a simple two-outcome hedge. Different point lines can create a score where both bets win, both lose, or one pushes while the other loses. Matching the odds or adjusting stakes cannot fix an uncovered score.

One point can reverse the risk

Assume the same full-game market, identical settlement rules, and a final total of 45 points. These lines describe different bets even if all the prices happen to be -110.

The line sets the winner; the price sets the payout

The 44.5 is the point line. The -110 is the price. Changing the price changes how much a winning bet pays; changing the line changes which results win.

In the gap example, $100 cash on each side loses $200 at a total of 45. No attractive payout elsewhere removes that case. For spreads, favorite -3.5 and underdog +2.5 similarly both lose if the favorite wins by exactly 3.

Check alternate lines before submitting

A matching alternate line may be available, but it has its own price. Recalculate using that exact line and current odds. Do not edit only the number in your records and assume the sportsbook ticket changed.

A middle needs an outcome-by-outcome calculation, including any push boundaries. Half-point lines avoid an integer-score push; they do not prevent voids, postponements, or period mismatches. For bonus bets, also check token treatment on a push instead of assuming cash is returned.

The takeaway

Read the points and the period before comparing prices. A middle and a gap are not the same thing.
