Why do opposite parlays not make a complete hedge?

BreadSync2 min readUpdated How we calculate

The short answer

Because “both picks win” and “both opposite picks win” do not cover every result. With two games, the winners can split across your parlays. In those mixed outcomes, both tickets lose even though you backed each team somewhere.

Two games create four combinations

Game 1 is A versus B. Game 2 is C versus D. Assume each game has one winner, no draws or voids, and matching settlement rules. Your first parlay is A + C; the supposedly opposite parlay is B + D. Each ticket requires both of its picks to win.

What the missing outcomes cost

If each parlay uses $25 cash, either mixed result loses the full $50. Changing the stakes or entering attractive odds into a two-outcome calculator cannot remove those uncovered cases.

The opposite of “A and C both win” is “at least one of A or C loses.” It is not “B and D both win.” Covering more combinations would be a different, more complicated calculation with its own prices, cash requirements, and acceptance risk.

A parlay-eligible bonus does not solve this

A reward may permit parlays without providing a simple opposite ticket. If a stake-not-returned token loses, the token is consumed; any losing cash bets still cost actual cash.

Before applying a two-outcome hedge calculation, identify exactly which result wins each side. Same-game parlays, draws, pushes, and voided legs need their own outcome and settlement checks. If you cannot list the covered outcomes clearly, do not treat the pair as balanced.

The takeaway

Opposite selections are not necessarily opposite tickets. Check every possible outcome.
